Fabrics for Window Treatments and Draperies

Home decor fabric for window treatments gives you a chance to make something that would otherwise be plain but functional into something that looks good by adding texture, color, and design to your interior design project.

The fabric used for curtains and draperies is often lighter in weight than the fabric used for upholstery. The majority of the time, you'll want to use a backing fabric to give the fabric additional fullness and UV protection. The right window treatment fabric can make a room look better and be useful by controlling light and giving you more privacy.

What are the fiber contents of our in-stock fabrics?

Our home decor fabrics come in natural fiber constructions, synthetic yarn constructions, and combinations of those fabric construction types. Blending synthetic and natural fibers allows designers to alter a yarn's characteristics and look. This process may be used to generate a yarn that combines the best attributes of the various fibers.

Natural Fiber Fabrics

A plant or animal would be the source of natural fiber used in natural fabric and for the most part is a sustainable resource. Some examples of natural fiber content fabrics we carry are:

  • Cotton - Available in a wide range of weights and may be used for drapery and upholstery applications. We sell many different types of cotton fabric from duck cloth, and cotton prints to cotton velvet fabrics.

  • Linen - Linen comes from the flax plant and is a strong natural fiber. Linen fabric is widely renowned for its absorbency, with the capacity to absorb up to 20% of its weight in moisture, as well as its breathability. Because it wicks moisture, it's popular for all home decor applications.

Fabrics woven from linen are roughly 30% more durable than those made from cotton, in addition, linen fabrics are more substantial, heavier, thicker, eco-friendly, and hypoallergenic. They generally seem crisper at first, but with time and wear, linen fabrics soften and become more pliable to the touch. We carry linen fabric by the yard for curtains, upholstery, and bed linens!

  • Silk - Silk fabric is made from the threadlike cocoons of silkworm caterpillars. Silk is pricey because of its scarcity and high manufacturing costs. To make just one kilogram of silk, it takes more than 5,000 silkworms.

Silk fabric is resistant to wrinkling and tearing, dries rapidly, and is the most hypoallergenic of all the different types of natural fibers. In contrast, Silk fabric is quite vulnerable to weathering. Cleaning a stain caused by even the smallest amount of water is impossible.

The exposure of silk to sunlight damages its fibers, which leads to the ripping and fading of the fabric. Silk's shine and luster are two of its best-selling points. When used with backing or lining it is a choice fabric for drapery, bedding, and upholstery.

  • Mohair Fabric - Mohair is a soft wool made from the Angora goat's hair and has a beautiful sheen and is very smooth. Some people call mohair the "diamond fiber" because takes dyes very well it has a unique shine and luster.

When light hits mohair, it shines. A velvet composed of mohair has a silky feel to it because of the softness of its fiber. It gets rid of moisture and is fire-resistant.

Mohair is stronger than steel of the same size, but not many people know this. We have mohair velvet is in stock!

Synthetic Fiber Fabrics

Fabrics made from Synthetic fibers are long-lasting textiles and they don't sacrifice performance in the process. They are made with desired characteristics and at prices that are cheaper than those of natural yarns. Some synthetic fabrics are considered performance fabrics which often have a larger market share since they are constructed to be more resistant to wrinkling, fading, and general wear and tear.

We carry many different types of synthetic fabric construction, below are a few examples:

  • Polyester - Polyester fabric is made from high-performance petroleum-based synthetic yarn, created in the 1950s. Polyester fabrics and fibers are very strong and resistant to most chemicals, stretching and shrinking, wrinkling, mildew, and abrasion.

  • Olefin - Olefin fibers are resistant to stains and may be cleaned without the need for preventive stain treatments. By weight, olefin (also known as polypropylene) creates less waste than any other plastic, making it the second most common plastic. As it is plastic, it is able to be recycled at local recycling plants in the United States.

  • Rayon - Rayon is a semi-natural fiber manufactured from cellulose, which is extracted from wood pulp. It was developed as an alternative to cotton, linen, and silk, and is often used in upholstery in combination with other materials.

Consequently, it is very soft and plush.  In addition, the fabric's luxurious aesthetic makes it a preferred textile for upholstery and drapery in home furnishings.

Why?

Because the mix of comfort and luxury is a winning formula.

  • Acrylic: Acrylic fabrics are stain and fade-resistant. Acrylic has the best colorfastness and lightfastness ratings of any yarn. For heavy-duty use, this fabric was initially created for outdoor upholstery and is very durable.

Acrylic solution dyed yarns are used to make outdoor fabric by brands like Sunbrella and Outdura. Outdoor fabric may be your best option if you're searching for a fabric that will be frequently exposed to sunlight in your house or outdoor living spaces for your outdoor patio furniture.

So, whatever your next project is, Childress Fabrics & Furniture is sure to have what you need.

Home decor fabric specifications to consider when shopping

Home decor fabric is any type of interior fabric used in an interior environment that needs to pass certain specifications.

  • Lightfastness - 40 hours of lightfastness is the industry standard for indoor upholstery fabric. This means that the fabric didn't fade after being exposed to direct UV light for 40 hours.

  • Textile Abrasion Test - The Wyzenbeek test (The most used testing method in the US) uses a machine that rubs cotton duck fabric back and forth across the test fabric. This is the abrasive material. The back-and-forth motion is called a "double rub." The test is run until the area of the fabric being rubbed shows signs of wear or until two yarns break.

  • Between 6,000 -  9,000 “double rubs” is considered light use such as a drapery fabric and light upholstery

  • Medium use is 9,000 - 15,000 double rubs which can be used for all residential even in high-traffic areas with pets and kids

  • 15,000 - 30,000  double rubs is considered heavy-use fabric for upholstery and drapery

  • 30,000 “double rubs” - this is suitable for fabric in hospitality and corporate office spaces

  • Cleaning codes - The Joint Industry Standards Committee made the test methods that fabric manufacturers used to come up with these cleaning codes. However, these washing codes do not guarantee a fabric's cleanability. Always test cleaning products in a small area first. Follow the directions on how to use and clean the product.

  • P - Professional dry cleaning is recommended.

  • S - The S means "solvent." If your fabric has an "S" cleaning code, it must be cleaned with an upholstery dry cleaning solution.

  • SW - The S/W cleaning code means that you can use a mixture of water and dry cleaning solution.

  • W - If your fabric has a "W," which stands for water and is usually the easiest to clean. You should be able to safely remove the stain or spot on it with an upholstery or carpet cleaner.

  • WS - Clean water-based stains with water-based cleaning agents.

  • X - Clean by lightly brushing or vacuuming only to remove dust particle buildup.
